Vacation Time Off
Vacation Time Off provides you with paid time off from your job for personal reasons including vacation, outside activities, and personal business. If your absence is due to an illness or injury, you should refer to the Sick Time Off page.
Eligibility
VMware employees who have been employed for a full preceding year are eligible for Vacation Time Off. Part – time employees and those starting their employment during the year, will receive pro-rata entitlement. The annual leave cycle runs from 1 January to 31 December each year.
Entitlement
VMware offers company enhanced vacation to all employees totalling five calendar weeks of vacation per calendar year.
In accordance with local law, the following applies:
An employee who starts working before 30 September of a vacation year is entitled to their full vacation entitlement for the year. An employee who begins working after this date later is only entitled to vacation of one calendar week in that year.
Employees are entitled to take their main vacation, comprising of 3 calendar weeks, during the main vacation period, starting from 1 June and ending on 30 September. This does not apply, however, to employees who take up their post after 15 August in the vacation year.
Vacations beyond the 3 calendar weeks during the main vacation period can be taken during the remainder of the year.
Employees aged 60 and over are entitled to additional week of vacation. This entitlement is added at the beginning of the vacation year in which the 60th birthday falls.
Scheduling Vacation Time Off
- As per Norwegian law, you are entitled to three continuous weeks’ holiday during the main holiday period from 1 June to 30 September. Employees are entitled to take the remainder of their holidays in one continuous period. The stipulation of vacation must be discussed with your manager prior to taking your leave.
- Once agreed with your manager enter your Annual Leave time off in Workday [VMware network access required] under time off type Vacation Time Off (Days).
Carry Forward
Carrying forward Leave Entitlement is not encouraged by VMware as we encourage you to take rest from work during each Leave Cycle. If however, you weren’t able to take your vacation days due to illness or any other reason, any unused vacation balance will carry forward to the next vacation year.
Additional Time Off based on Tenure
VMware offers company enhanced additional Time Off based on their anniversary of your service:
- Statutory entitlement 25 Days
- After 2 years of service, 27 days per year
- After 5 years of service, 28 days per year
- After 8 years of service, 30 days per year
If you fail to take your additional vacation days before the end of the vacation year, the additional vacation days will be lost. In addition, you are not allowed to carry forward these additional vacation days to the next vacation year or request pay in lieu.
When leaving VMware, any additional vacation days must be taken in the notice period. Any unused additional service days will be considered as used during the notice period and if not taken they will be considered lost with no payment offered in lieu.
Time Off Entitlement upon Termination of Employment
Involuntary Termination
If your employment is terminated by the company, you will still be able to take any unused vacation during the notice period according to The Holiday Act. If you have a notice period of three months or more, VMware has the right to unilaterally determine the vacation dates if circumstances require.
Voluntary termination
If you resign, VMware can decide to determine the vacation dates during the notice period according to The Holiday Act. Any unused vacation days will be paid upon leaving the company with your final salary.
