VMware provides Life Insurance and Accidental Death and Disablement Insurance to all regular employees.

Life Insurance Benefits

VMware provides Life Insurance through the Retirement plan with Nationale-Nederlanden.


All regular employees of VMware between the ages of 21 and 68 years of age are eligible to participate in the Life Insurance Plan with Nationale-Nederlanden.


If you should die while in the service of VMware due to illness or injury your beneficiaries will receive an insured lifetime annuity based on the formula:

  • A partner pension: amount of the *pension base times attainable years of service x 1.16% (final pay system).
  • An orphans’​​ pension: 20% of the partner’s pension until age 21 of the child concerned (27 in case the child is studying or disabled).
  • ANW-Gap Pension (temporary payment until statutory retirement date of the surviving partner).
    • Insured benefit € 15,814.00 (2020-​figure​)
    • Insured on a voluntary basis
  • Extra Survivor’s Pension (lifelong payment to the surviving partner and children).
    • The extra survivor’s pension is an insured annuity and includes a net partner’s and a net orphan’s pension. These net pensions are based on the formula:
      • Net partner’s pension: salary exceeding the threshold * attainable years of service between 1 January 2015 or later hiring date and retirement date * 0.663% (career average pay system).
      • Net orphan’s pension: salary exceeding the threshold * attainable years of service between 1 January 2015 or later hiring date and retirement date * 0.132%% (career average pay system).
    • Voluntary plan for all employees having a partner and/or children with a salary exceeding the threshold (2020: € 110,111).
    • Maximum pensionable salary € 297,168.00 (2020-figure).

*The pension base is the annual salary (capped at € 107,593.00 until 1 August 2020 and thereafter € 110,111.00) minus the statutory offset (€ 20,852.00 until 1 August 2020, annually adjusted on 1st August).

Accidental Death and Dismemberment

VMware provides Accidental Death and Disablement (AD&D) Insurance through W.A. Hienfeld Assuradeuren B.V.


All regular full and part time employees of VMware Netherlands up to age 70 are eligible for Accidental Death and Disablement (AD&D) Insurance.


Covered Event Benefit
Death due to an accident Your beneficiaries will receive a lump sum payment of two (2) times your annual reference salary*
Permanent Disability due to an accident You and/or your beneficiaries will receive a lump sum payment of four (4) times your annual reference salary*
Other reimbursements You will receive a reimbursement for personal belongings, hospitalization benefit, psychological aid and extra sum insured in case of paraplegia or quadriplegia, all in relation to a covered event (accident).

* Annual reference salary = the salary that is taxable for wage tax purposes in the calendar year prior to the year in which the accident occurred.



VMware pays 100% of the premium costs for the Life Insurance and Accidental Death and Disablement insurance.

Iyou opt in for insuring the ANW-Gap pension and/or the Extra Survivor’s pension (ESP), these premiums will be fully paid for by you. The risk premiums are deducted from your gross monthly salary (tax advantage).

When Coverage Begins 

Coverage will begin on your first day of active work as a VMware employee. 

When Coverage Ends 

Coverage will end on the last day of your employment with VMware.
