Parental Leave

VMware provides parental leave in accordance with statutory requirements so that you can take the necessary time off work to take care for your child.

Parental Leave is available to natural mothers and fathers and adoptive mothers and fathers in most jurisdictions. Each parent’s eligibility to take Parental Leave is based on their own entitlement at the time the leave is taken. Two (2) parents who qualify for Parental Leave are neither required to take their share of Parental Leave at the same time, nor prevented from doing so. Some jurisdictions limit leave entitlement to be shared between parents who work for the same employer.

Parental Leave is generally taken immediately following Maternity Leave but may be taken by either parent at any time in the first fifty-two (52) weeks of a child’s life. As with Maternity Leave, the legislation in most jurisdictions requires you to have worked for VMware for a specified period before becoming eligible for Parental Leave. The amount of leave to which parents are entitled varies from thirty-four (34) to fifty-two (52) weeks.

Jurisdiction Qualifying Period Length of Leave
Federal 6 consecutive months 37 weeks
Alberta 52 weeks 37 weeks
British Columbia Not specified 37 weeks (35 if pregnancy leave is taken)

Scheduling Parental Leave

You should inform your manager of your intent to take Parental Leave as soon as reasonably possible. This will allow adequate time for the proper arrangements to be made prior to your leave period.

Returning to Work

While on Parental Leave, you should maintain open communication with your manager and  HR Source [VMware network access required]. VMware will assume that you wish to return to work at the end of your Parental Leave period; however, you should contact  HR Source [VMware network access required] towards the end of your leave to confirm and arrange your return to work.
