Parental Leave

VMware provides Parental Leave in accordance with statutory requirements so that you can take the necessary time off work to take care for your child.

Eligibility

To be eligible for Parental Leave you must be the mother or father of a child under the age of seven (7) years and have responsibility for the child’s upbringing.

Entitlement

After the period of compulsory non-employment has expired, the mothers or fathers (living with the child) are entitled to take unpaid Parental Leave (Karenz) until the child reaches the age of two (2). 

Alternatively, or if the Parental Leave is terminated earlier, the mother or father are entitled to work part-time as long as you have been employed by VMware for at least three (3) years.  The entitlement to work part-time lasts until the child is seven (7) years old.

Payment

You are entitled to a child care allowance, which is payable instead of the former Parental Leave allowance.  A parent is entitled to a child care allowance if he/she is also entitled to child benefits for this child from the state (Familienbeihilfe).

A child care allowance is payable until the child reaches the age of thirty-six (36) months if both parents claim (successively) the allowance. If the allowance is only applied for by one parent it can be paid until the child reaches the age of thirty (30) months.

Scheduling Parental Leave

Discuss your Parental Leave plans, in advance, with your manager. While business requirements must be taken into consideration, your manager will work with you to ensure that work load does not restrict you from taking Parental Leave. Be sure to contact HR Source [VMware network access required] during your Maternity Leave to schedule your Parental Leave.

Returning to Work

While on Parental Leave you should maintain open communication with your manager and HR Source [VMware network access required]. VMware will assume that you wish to return to work at the end of your Parental Leave period however; you should contact HR Source [VMware network access required] towards the end of your scheduled Leave to confirm and arrange your return to work.
